Kumbh Mela is one of the great roving festivals that have moved around India for more than four thousand years where millions of devotees gather to wash away their sins in the holy waters. The Kumbh Mela is the festival of urn that pours out the nectar of immortality. 2013 is the year of celebrating the Maha Kumbh at Allahabad which comes after 144 years, after completing 12 Purna kumbh melas. It is considered to be holiest of all. More than one million people from all walks of life from all corners of the globe flock the banks of confluence of three sacred rivers, the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati at Allahabad which is termed as Triveni Sangam. In Allahabad the Kumbh Mela is celebrated in the months of January – February when Jupiter is in Aries or Taurus and when the Sun and Moon are in Capricorn in the Hindu month of Magha.
The Maha Kumbh Mela of 2013 begins from 27th January to 25th February at Prayag/ Allahabad . The complete date-wise schedule of Maha Kumbh Mela 2013 is as follows:
- 27th January (Sunday) - Paush Purnima
- 6th February (Wednesday) - Ekadashi Snan
- 10th February (Sunday) - Mauni Amavasya Snan (Main Bathing Day)
- 15th February (Friday) - Basant Panchami Snan
- 17th February (Sunday) - Rath Saptami Snan
- 18th February (Monday) - Bhisma Ekadashi Snan
- 25th February (Monday) - Maghi Purnima Snan
After submitting the final blueprint of Maha Kumbh 2013 and seeking the budget of Rs 1,924 cr. the union and State Government have mooted the concept of Green Kumbh. Under the Green Kumbh concept, the mela administration imposing a ban on the use of polythene in and around mela campus to avoid any kind of air, sound and water pollution. The authorities have also decided to carry out aerial monitoring during the Mahakumbh. No waste is allowed to be thrown into the river. The mela administrative has planned to offer saplings to pilgrims to promote plantation drive in the area. The police too are holding meetings to give shape to Green Kumbh concept. Environment friendly look to 64 roads in and around mela campus is given and permanent ghats are constructed on the banks of river Ganga and Yamuna. For the implementation of this drive various NGO’s educational institutes, social organizations are approached to spread the message of Green Kumbh. The violators would be dealt strictly on the spot. Help from the all sections of the society in this endeavor is expected from all walks of life is expected from all walks of life.
